The Relic Abundance of Long-lived Heavy Colored Particles

Long-lived colored particles with masses m > 200 GeV are allowed by current accelerator searches, and are predicted by a number of scenarios for physics beyond the standard model. We argue that such "heavy partons'' effectively have a geometrical cross section (of order 10 mb) for annihilation at temperatures below the QCD deconfinement transition. The annihilation process involves the formation of an intermediate bound state of two heavy partons with large orbital angular momentum. The bound state subsequently decays by losing energy and angular momentum to photon or pion emission, followed by annihilation of the heavy partons. This decay occurs before nucleosynthesis for m < 10^{11} GeV for electrically charged partons and m < TeV for electrically neutral partons. This implies that heavy parton lifetimes as long as 10^{14} sec are allowed even for heavy partons with m ~ TeV decaying to photons or hadrons with significant branching fraction.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. A study of the characteristics of high energy nuclear active particles in extensive air showers

    Get PDF
The characteristics of hadrons of energy > 300 Gev in extensive air showers of size 5.10(^4) - 1.6.10(^6) particles at sea level has been investigated using a neon flash tube chamber as a hadron detector operated in conjunction with part of the Durham air shower array. The lateral distribution of hadrons tends to flatten as the shower size increases. The energy spectrum in the range 500 - 1000 Gev can be represented as a power law with exponent l.0(^+)0.1 beyond this energy the spectrum gradually steepens. The energy and shower size dependence, of the quantity E(_n).r (reflecting the transverse momenta of hadrons, where E(_n) is the hadron energy and r, is the distance between the hadron aid shower core) has been determined. The results are in agreement with the hypothesis of an increasing transverse momentum of produced particles in ultra high energy collisions. A measurement of the energy spectrum of hadrons either accompanied or not has been performed. In the energy range 400 Gev up to about 8 Tev the measured differential energy spectrum shows a constant slope of 2.74(^+)0.16. A search for magnetic monopoles has been carried out. Eleven anomolous events that could be attributed to high Z -particles ( Z- 20) have been observed. To estimate the energy of hadrons interacting in a thick (15cms) lead or iron (l5cms) absorbers, the burst size was detected by scintillators placed under the lead and the iron. A calculation has been carried out to relate the burst size and the hadron energy

Complementary Ansatz for the neutrino mass matrix

    Get PDF
We propose a simple Ansatz for the three generation neutrino mass matrix MνM_\nu which is motivated from an SO(10) grand unified theory. The Ansatz can be combined with information from neutrino oscillation experiments and bounds on neutrinoless double beta decay to determine the neutrino masses themselves and to reconstruct, with some assumptions, the matrix Mν M_\nu .Comment: 15 pages, RevteX, submitted to Phys. Objectives. To evaluate the association of serum lipoprotein(a) Lp(a)] with carotid intimal media thickness (IMT) and carotid femoral plaque occurrence in kidney transplant patients. Patients and Methods. Fifty-four subjects included 29 group 1 normal healthy persons and 25 group 2 kidney transplant patients underwent carotid IMT measurements and carotid femoral plaque assessment by B-mode ultrasonography. Also we measured cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-C, LDL-C and Lp(a) as well as BUN and creatinine. Results. There was a significant difference between Lp(a) in the two groups (P = .016). There was a significant difference between carotid IMT of the two groups (P .05). There was a significant correlation between carotid IMT with age in Group 1 (P = .035). No correlation between carotid IMT and serum Lp(a) was seen in the two groups. No significant correlations between plaque score and serum Lp(a) were observed. There was no correlation between duration of transplant and thickening of intimal media complex in this group. In this group a positive correlation was demonstrated between carotid IMT with serum LDL-C (P < .001). Conclusions. Age was the most important factor associated with thickening of intimal media complex in normal subjects and in plaque formation in the renal transplant group. Serum LDL-C may be associated with thickening of intimal media complex in kidney transplant patients. Serum Lp(a) may not be a significant factor in thickening of the intimal media complex or plaque occurrence in kidney transplant patients

    Investigating the Light Scalar Mesons

    Get PDF
We first briefly review a treatment of the scalars in meson meson scattering based on a non-linear chiral Lagrangian, with unitarity implemented by a "local" modification of the scalar propagators. It is shown that the main results are confirmed by a treatment in the SU(3) linear sigma model in which unitarity is implemented "globally". Some remarks are made on the speculative subject of the scalars' quark structure.Comment: 9 pages,3 figures, talk at hadron2001, Protvin

Positive correlation of serum leptin with blood lymphocytes in maintenance hemodialysis patients

    Get PDF
Objective: The objective of this study was to find the association of serum leptin with blood lymphocyte and polymorphonuclear (PMN) percentages as the markers of immune system function as well as nutritional status in maintenance hemodialysis patients. Design: In a group of maintenance hemodialysis patients, serum leptin, albumin, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and white blood cell counts consisting of lymphocytes and PMN cells were measured. Results: A significant positive correlation of serum leptin with body mass index, a significant positive correlation of serum leptin with lymphocyte percentage, and a significant inverse correlation of serum leptin with PMN percentage were seen. Near significant inverse correlations of white blood cell counts with duration and dosage of dialysis, a near significant inverse correlation of white blood cell counts with hemodialysis adequacy, and a significant inverse correlation of white blood cell counts with serum albumin were seen. Conclusion: Generally, increased neutrophil counts and reduced lymphocyte counts are independent predictors of increased mortality risk in hemodialysis patients. Although this study and others showed positive association of serum leptin with lymphocytes and an inverse correlation of serum leptin with PMNs, the authors conclude a protective role for leptin in decreasing mortality in hemodialysis patients; therefore, serum leptin in hemodialysis has a reverse epidemiology role for maintaining immune system function in hemodialysis

Electroweak Phase Transition in the U(1)' MSSM

In this work, we have investigated the nature of the electroweak phase transition in the U(1) extended minimal supersymmetric standard model without introducing any exotic fields. The effective potential has been estimated exactly at finite temperature taking into account the whole particle spectrum. For reasonable values of the lightest Higgs and neutralino, we found that the electroweak phase transition could be strongly first order due to: (1) the interactions of the singlet with the doublets in the effective potential, and (2) the evolution of the wrong vacuum that delays the transition.Comment: substantial changes, references added, 18 pages, 4 figure

Concurrent diabetic nephropathy and C1q nephropathy in a young male patient: The first report in literature

    Get PDF
Background: C1q nephropathy (C1qN) is an uncommon glomerulopathy with a significant deposition of C1q in mesangium without clinical evidence of lupus. According to the best of our knowledge, there is not any report on coincidence of diabetes mellitus and C1qN. Case presentation: In this report, we presented a 28 years-old-patient with type 1 diabetes and nephrotic range proteinuria, glomerular hematuria and C1q glomerulopathy in renal biopsy. Conclusions: According to the best of our knowledge, there is no previous report about the association between type 1 DM and C1qN. Prevalence of autoimmune disease is higher in type 1 DM and this may explain the relation between DM and C1qN in our patient. © 2013, Society of Diabetic Nephropathy Prevention. All rights reserved

Correlation of serum magnesium with dyslipidemia in maintenance hemodialysis patients.

    Get PDF
One of the factors involved in accelerated atherosclerosis in hemodialysis patients is dyslipidemia. In this study we considered factors involved in intensification of dyslipidemia in hemodialysis patients. This study was done on 36 maintenance hemodialysis patients. Serum lipoprotein (a), Triglyceride, Cholesterol, HDL-C,LDL-C and also serum Intact parathormone(iPTH), Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium were measured. In statistical analysis there was not any correlation between serum lipids and iPTH. There was not correlation between serum calcium with serum lipids (p > 0.05). There was not correlation between CaxP product with serum lipids (p > 0.05). There was a positive correlation between serum Magnesium and Lipoprotein(a) (P < 0.05) and also positive correlation between serum magnesium with triglyceride level (P < 0.05) was seen too. Magnesium doesn't increase the lipoprotein synthesis. It may involve in the regulation of some enzymes responsible for lipoprotein synthesis. Correlation of serum magnesium with serum triglycerides can be due to changes in hepatic triglyceride metabolism. Lipoprotein(a) is a non traditional factor of premature atherosclerosis, its association with serum magnesium needs more attention in hemodialysis patients
